On A 64-bit Version Of Windows 10, Where Are 32-bit Apps Typically Installed?

Ravinath P

Hi Gary,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

As you have a query on why the programs run in 32 bit when you have a 64 bit of Windows 10 installed. We need to install 64 bit application to run those in 64 bit processing set. If you install 32 bit applications it will run on 32 bit mode even if you have a 64 bit Operating system installed.

Let us know if you have installed any 64 bit program and it doesn't show in c:\Program Files folder.

Try installing 64 bit applications and let us know if it runs in 32 bit mode.

Hope I have answered your query, if not please let us know to assist you better.

My Skype is running in 32bit mode. Update says I have the latest, Skype download site won't let you pick 64bit, just for desktop. It's a little fuzzy looking.

Task Manager says Chrome and Office 2007 are also both running in 32bit.

32-bit programs will run in 32-bit mode whether or not the OS is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Very few programs are 64-bit. And, 64-bit programs will run in 64-bit mode on a 64-bit OS.

Chrome and Skype have 64bit versions, I had them in this box with Win 7... Skype doesn't give you the option to DL the 64bit, but Chrome will (haven't done it yet). The Win 10 update is defaulting some programs to 32bit, which should be running in 64bit. My AutoCAD 2016 was installed as 64bit a month ago and still is running at 64.

Every time Chrome is re-started, it performs all applicable upgrades. (This is why it is not a good idea to leave the computer and browser always ON). I shut mine OFF every night for this very reason.

Whats the sense of having a 64 bit OS when every things being seen an loaded in 32 bit? And I think It is windows 10 because all windows apps are 32 bit so they set up the system to auto lode 32 bit everything!  For compatibility with their **** 32 bit apps an third party 32 bit security risky BS apps, I for one have had nothing but problem after problem, an I'm about to smash this PC I've wasted ( 1,400 $) on into tiny little pieces, an send 1/2 of it to Microsoft an the other half to ASUS! an then go out an buy a real PC with Apple Installed or Linux even my Norton loaded in 32 bit, an audio drivers, video drivers, ETC, ETC, ETC I for one M just about done with this third party BS spyware ready threat, (called windows 10) allows anybody an their brothers (etc) in the back door of your PC by Default, (Pathetic) Is the word that come to mind when I here (Windows 10 is the best an most secure!)   BS Its bean the worst threat ever I've encountered, an the most incompatible,  An absolutely no help from Microsoft or their support team, all I get Is contact your manufacturer, or you sign the terms an Licence agreement, (In short your screwed) witch I've never sign anything their was no agreement on the side of the box it sold in! cause if their were? I would have looked at it a whole lot closer, an probably wouldn't have purchased this PC (nothing works like advertised on the box) altogether! an bought some thing Different,That was a little more secure an a little less demanding an or controlling my every key stroke, an apps that i want or don't want, good Luck to you you'll need it, were all in the same sinking Windows 10 ship, An I for one M close to bailing out, for security reasons.                                                                                                              Rant: solved Big Bugs, I take back half of what I said, not going to say (what half)! Because my data maybe harvested,, Key strokes monitored or recorded called key loggers, an some one I don't want with the data might just get it! an then know both half's, an we cant have that, So I'm standing on the fifth amendment.

One of the main reasons to use 64 bit is to support more RAM. As others pointed out, most software is still 32 bit.

You say you're having problems with the PC. Can you elaborate?

I updated my Windows 10 this morning, and everything is running slower.  In E-Mail, it takes up to 45 seconds just to scroll to the next message, and clicking on posts to delete or move, freezes up the system.  I tried to reset, even to the point of only saving my files, but that was useless.  Looks like I'll have to take this into the shop to have the System purged of all these latest blessings.  Another thing I noticed, is that with my security program, I had my Computer set to notify me ahead of time if a site was safe before I bothered to search a question.  Now all those green checks and red X's are gone, leaving me to guess again.  I got one malicious web block just checking out a question about the economy.  The colors are different, and everything feels off with whatever I normally do.  I'm not happy.  When is Windows 11 coming out.  I'm ready for a change.
